Steffen Dance Competition Team Dress Rehearsal

When: Saturday, March 15 and Sunday, March 16

  • Competitive Team: All pieces will be run on the Holy Heart Theatre Stage competition style as per the above schedule. After each group has performed there is a separate 30 min staging rehearsal for the groups in order to work out any onstage issues. Full hair, make up, costume, accessories and shoes are expected for the dress rehearsal session. Dance clothes and the appropriate shoes are acceptable for the staging rehearsals.

  • Pre-Competitive Team: All pre-competitive pieces receive an hour onstage. Dancers must arrive in full make up, hair, costume, dance shoes and accessories. Pre-competitive classes on Saturday go ahead as normal.

Where: Holy Heart Theatre

Expectations:

  • Arrival Time is 30 minutes prior to dancer’s first dance. Dancer’s must check in with our front of house volunteer when they enter. While dancers may leave once they have finished, it is encouraged that they stay and cheer on their teammates as they run their pieces. When leaving, dancers must check in with our front of house volunteer to sign out. This is very important in case of a fire alarm.

  • Dancers must arrive in full hair and makeup for their first dance with appropriate costumes and tights on.

  • Dancers should bring a large bag or suitcase with supplies to do makeup and hair changes. Properly organizing and labelling will help volunteers with getting your dancers ready for their dances. Labelling supplies is important. For example, there will be over 300 jazz shoes in the room through the days. You must make sure your shoes are labelled. Volunteers are not responsible for tracking your dancer’s supplies.

  • Once dancers have finished each piece they must immediately get into hair, makeup and costume for their next piece if it is within an hour. While I have done my best to provide at least 15 minutes for dancers to change, there will be some quick changes and we may edit running order accordingly as the day goes on to allow people more time to change. Once dancers are ready to perform they will go in and watch the dress rehearsal until it is there turn. They should head backstage 3 numbers before their own piece.

  • Parents are encouraged to come in and watch their dancers. Please note this will not be running as a performance. We may start and stop, have dancers redo their dances or take moments in between each dance to make notes on the performance. I have allowed extra time throughout the day so that we do not run behind when these pauses are necessary. The focus of the day is the dancers and finding any problem areas. Parents will not be allowed in the backstage area unless they are a volunteer. If you are staying to watch please remain quiet so not to distract from the dress rehearsal.

  • Volunteers and senior buddies will help our younger dancers with their hair, make up and clothing changes.

  • For snacks and lunches, please make sure that anything they bring will not stain their costumes. Absolutely no popcorn, gold fish or other items that will spill easily. No food or drink in the theatre space or dressing rooms. We will set up an eating area in the foyer on the second floor.

  • When entering the theatre, please wait for the previous dance to have finished before entering so that dancer’s on stage are not distracted.

  • The competitive team schedule for the following Sunday (March 23) will be sent out on Monday March 17. The rehearsals for this day will be based on the performances at the dress rehearsal. I always use this day to confidence build and touch on any issues that came up in dress rehearsal before we head into our first competition on March 26.
